It is with deep regret and profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of Ian MacKinnon, SOL’s honorary patron. Ian passed away last Thursday evening in Park Springs Nursing Home.

SOL originally worked for Ian’s late daughter Fiona and it was because of Fiona that he dedicated the vast majority of his life to being a voice for people with support needs. A tireless fundraiser, Ian also had numerous dealings with the council over the years, sometimes being viewed as an ally and sometimes being the voice of opposition, but always a man who stood up for what he believed in. He also served for many years as a trustee of SOL, supporting and giving sound advice to organisational culture and development.

His primary concern was that his daughter and her friends enjoyed life to the full and along the way he has helped to shape his community and changed people’s lives.

SOL’s Director, Donna Thompson commented “Ian was an amazing man, one of a kind, the likes of whom we are unlikely to see again. He was an inspiration to us all on so many occasions. He loved SOL and only a couple of years ago got an honorary patronage from us and the grand title of ‘Mr SOL’ which I know he was really proud of and which meant a lot to him.

He also had the most amazing team, as we all know in SOL, who were totally devoted to him. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time. There are no words to describe them other than amazing people!”

The organisation would like to pass on our heartfelt condolences to Ian’s family and his team who have worked with Ian and his family for a number of years.
